Better prognosis for BRCA 2 faulty gene

The British Journal of Cancer released a new research that states men with faulty BRCA2 gene and who are under 65 years with prostate cancer could benefit from a special targeted treatment.

Each year around 9500 men with ages below 65 years are diagnosed with prostate cancer and a 25 percent of all these cases are in UK. Doctors say that in prostate cancer one of the most important factors is age. Prostate cancer rarely appears in men who are younger than 50 years but half of all cases happen to men of age 70 and more. Furthermore, a study carried out by The institute of Cancer Research shows that one in 100 men who are at some point diagnosed with prostate cancer while at the same time being younger than 65 has a faulty BRCA2 gene.

This fact made doctors and researcher alike very curios and they stared researching to see if there is any connection between the faulty BRCA 2 gene and prostate cancer in men under 65 years.

Patients who have this faulty gene and are under the age of 65 could become a priority for clinical trials because they can develop special treatments that adapt perfectly for their unique condition. One such treatment would be with PARP inhibitors. They already proved to be efficient in patient trials with BRCA mutations and this expands to other types of cancer such as breast and ovarian cancer.

The treatment works by administering patients with high doses of PARP inhibitors to prostate cancer patients as they prevent cancerous cells from multiplying. In many case the PARP inhibitors stop the growing of the tumors or can even shrink it.

Doctors believe that it should become mandatory that all male patients under the age of 65 should be checked if they have a faulty BRCA2 gene when they take their regular controls. It also has been noticed that patients who have been diagnosed with the faulty BRCA2 gene tend to have bad prognosis. It is not clear yet why is that but doctors hope to uncover the mysteries behind this faulty gene and perhaps someday develop effective treatments.
